Now That's What I Call a Working from Home Soundtrack!
If you’re a champion social distancer joining us from the comfort of your own home, dear reader — you are not alone. These are strange times, and while we adjust to the reality of the great indoors, the goal is to stay healthy, sane, and productive. We find that music helps. So, in lieu of whatever jams are usually emanating from the office Sonos system, here’s an uplifting playlist — themed around, what else, work!
1. Work (Rihanna feat. Drake)
This 2016 chart-topping patois anthem takes up the complexities of money and love. But did you know that studies show midtempo dancehall music makes people 25% more likely to slo-mo dance in mesh? True story.
2. Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now (The Smiths)
Everybody indulges in a good mope now and then, but Morrissey puts the rest of us to shame in the melancholy department.
I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I'm miserable now
I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now
In my life
Why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?
Of course, you have never, ever felt like this for a split second about life. We’re just putting it out there to remind you how lucky you are not to relate.
3. A Hard Day's Night (The Beatles)
Whether you're working like a dog, or working with your dog, listen to this Beatles' number one hit and you're like to feel SEEN. The Fab Four seemed to be a bit unclear on whether the song inspired the movie or the movie begat the song, but the '60s were hazy like that so we'll give them a pass.
4. She Works Hard For The Money (Donna Summer)
Let's hear it for the ladies! Earning on average $0.79 to a man's dollar, we do indeed work hard for this bread. Legend has it that Ms. Summer scribbled down her ideas for this hit on a piece of toilet paper after meeting a very hard-working bathroom attendant. True or not, we thank her for this tribute to women everywhere.
5. Everybody’s Working for the Weekend (Loverboy)
That’s right, everybody. Even Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. Whoever made the accompanying video had something to say about the Lakers/Celtics clash, but more importantly... teamwork. Host a virtual happy host, high-five one another through the cloud, blast this triumphant jam to get primed for whatever!
6. 9 to 5 (Dolly Parton)
Dolly knows the grind is enough to drive you crazy if you let it, even when you're not stuck at home. Luckily, she’s here to save the day! Acrylic nails and typewriter jams. Spilling coffee on your pumps mid-commute. Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin tying up the bossman in an elaborate revenge plot, this video has it all.
